Gloves made for cycling have palm padding that really saves your hand from discomfort on longer trips. The gloves will also protect your hands if you fall or crash while riding. They have another benefit: sun protection for your hands.

The full-finger variety of gloves offer 100% coverage; they're great if you can accept the different fingertip feel when you grasp things.

Many other kinds of glove could work. In particular, I've noticed that some weightlifting gloves strongly resemble cycling gloves: long cuff, padded palm, fingers covered except the last joint. If you lift weights at a gym, then one glove pair could perform two duties.

If you might need to ride in the dark, reflective gloves would be very helpful for signaling.
